KMEA Works With Our Local, State and Federal Goverments
Kansas Music Educators Association and National Association for Music Education work with Local, State and Federal Governments to advocate for Music Education. Each year Kansas hosts a day at the Kansas Capitol in support of Music Education and KMEA travels each year to Washington, D.C. to speak to our State Legislators about the importance of Music Education in our schools and communities.

Kansas Music Educators Association @ Washington D.C.
Kansas Music Educators Association traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the National Association for Music Education’s National Assembly in June, 2019. In 2020, this event was cancelled, but in 2021 it was virtual. Again, KMEA travelled to the National Assembly in Washington D.C. in 2022. This three-day event allowed the KMEA Leadership to meet our Kansas Legislators in their offices. The Leadership Team discussed the importance of music education and asked for each legislator’s support to fully fund all education bills affecting music education. The Leadership Team had the opportunity to meet with all 6 Kansas legislators offices and staff. The KMEA delegation travelled to Washington D.C. in the summer of 2025 to meet with Decision-makers and to attend the NAfME National Assembly. In 2023 - 2025, KMEA Leadership was able to attend the NAfME National Leadership Conference again.
KMEA Music Advocacy Day @ The Kansas Capitol
This year the the 11th Annual Music Advocacy Day @ The Capitol will be on Wednesday, March 4, 2026! The KMEA Advocacy and Government Relations division hosted on behalf of President Damian Johnson, the 10th annual Music Advocacy Day @ The Capitol. The purpose of the day on March 26, 2025 was to promote music education in Kansas and to show the Kansas Legislators both at the state and federal level the KMEA organization. It was hosted as part of Music In Our Schools Month or MIOSM. The KMEA Leadership team of the Executive Council and Advocacy/Government Relations spoke to many Kansas Legislators and was given the opportunity to speak to the Kansas House of Representatives and Senate Education Committees. Kansas Music Educators Association on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 sent representatives from KMEA, along with the Washburn Rural HS Orchestra and Eudora HS Choirs to the Kansas Capitol to spend part of the day with Kansas legislators discussing the importance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM).
